Havertown neighborhoods we serve

Havertown shares one ZIP code, 19083, but it's really a patchwork of older communities inside Haverford Township. Here's a little of each one's background, and what it means for the roof over your head.

Is Havertown a town?

Is Havertown its own town? No. Havertown is an unincorporated community and postal name inside Haverford Township, Delaware County. The Post Office coined the name, and it came into use on January 1, 1946. Neighborhoods such as Brookline, Llanerch, Manoa, Oakmont, Penfield and Bon Air share ZIP 19083, and Haverford Township issues their building permits.

That last part matters for your roof: every Havertown re-roof goes through the same Township permit and re-roofing rules. See the permit guide.

Brookline

Brookline's street pattern already appears in a 1909 plan, but the major development came after World War I, when the Manor Real Estate Company, a railroad subsidiary, laid out "Brookline Manor": residential streets organized around today's Brookline Boulevard, meeting Darby Road at a T. The Historical Society's neighborhood list counts Brookline Manor, Brookline Gardens, Brookview and West Brookline among Brookline's subdivisions.

For your roof: houses from that era are about a century old, and twins and rows are common near the Boulevard. Expect board decking, older chimney flashing and a party-wall seam that may have been patched more than once. See replacing one half of a twin.

Llanerch

Llanerch, near West Chester Pike and Darby Road, is described as Haverford Township's first planned community. It grew around the trolley: the Philadelphia and West Chester Traction Company began service in 1895 with a major junction at Llanerch, and by 1897 the community had twelve houses and Saint Andrew's Church.

For your roof: some of the township's oldest planned-community homes are here. On a house this age the attic tells us as much as the shingles do, including whether there's slate or wood shingle under the current roof.

Manoa

Manoa's history runs from the early 1800s, when the township's earliest post office was at the Spread Eagle Tavern, at the junction of today's Eagle and Manoa Roads, to the brick tract developments built after World War II. Wikipedia names Manoa, with Beechwood and Chatham Park, among the large brick tract developments, and the Historical Society lists more than a dozen Manoa subdivisions and developments, from Manoa Manor to Westwood Park.

For your roof: homes from the late-1940s and 1950s boom have had their original roofs replaced, and there may be more than one layer up there now. Layers affect what the Township allows, so we count them before quoting. See the re-roofing rules.

Oakmont

Oakmont's business district has hosted the Haverford Music Festival every year since 2011; the Haverford Township Civic Council introduced the festival. The Historical Society's list includes Oakmont Manor and Oakmont Park among its subdivisions.

For your roof: housing around Oakmont spans several decades, so there's no single standard scope. We price your house, not the neighborhood's average.

Penfield

Penfield is one of the community names residents used before "Havertown" existed, and the Historical Society treats it as one of the township's 28 neighborhoods, with Penfield Downs listed separately.

Beechwood and Chatham Park

Beechwood and Chatham Park were part of the post-World War II wave of large brick-house tract developments. The Historical Society lists Chatham Park as a single development, built by one builder to largely standard designs.

For your roof: standard designs mean similar roof shapes up and down the street, but not similar roof histories. Some houses are on their second or third roof, and some have more than one layer. We check the attic and the layers on your house before we quote.

Bon Air

Bon Air is another pre-1946 community name. The Historical Society's list puts Bon Air Farm, Eagle Farms and Lynne Glade among its subdivisions.

Coopertown

Coopertown appears in records as early as 1848 as the township's first community, and Darby Road was once called Coopertown Road.
